Do you know why Valentine’s Day is the holiday of lovers? Who set the date for this anniversary and what is its history?
Before the legend of Valentine’s Day was established and February 14 became the precise day of this festival in the same period (and since the fourth century BC) the Romans used to celebrate a fertility rite in which a divinity was invoked, Lupercus, called to protect and bring fertility to couples.
The Church, considering the Roman tradition immoral, undertook to find a substitute, a saint of lovers who could eclipse Lupercus. The chosen saint was therefore Saint Valentine of Terni, a protector of lovers, who by giving the flowers of his garden to a couple of young people who loved each other would bless them making sure that they stayed together forever.

Why was San Valentino chosen as the patron saint of lovers?
He is considered the patron saint of lovers because legend has it that he was the first religious who celebrated the union between a pagan legionary and a young Christian.
Is there any particular story about it?
It is said that one day, Valentine’s Day, he heard two young engaged couples pass by his garden. Then he went to meet him holding a rose that he gave them, begging them to reconcile, holding the stem of the same together, taking care not to sting and praying that the Lord would keep their love alive forever. Some time later the couple asked him for the blessing of their marriage. When the story spread, many decided to go on pilgrimage by the bishop of Terni on the 14th of each month, the day dedicated to blessings. Then the date was restricted only in February, because on that day of 273 Valentine’s Day died.
